Person Centered
A person-centred approach to support work is a way of providing care and support that puts the person at the center of the service and respects their individuality, preferences, and goals. A person-centred approach involves:
- Talking with the person and listening to what they want and need
- Planning with the person and involving them in decisions about their care and support
- Focusing on the person’s strengths, abilities, and interests, not just their condition or disability
- Finding solutions that suit the person’s lifestyle and preferences, preferably in the community
- Supporting the person to achieve their aspirations and live a fulfilling life
- Working in partnership with the person’s family, carers, and support network
A person-centered approach aims to empower the person to have more choice and control over their life and to promote their dignity and human rights. A person-centered approach can improve the quality of care and support for the person and their carers, as well as the satisfaction and wellbeing of the workers who provide it.
A holistic approach can benefit the person by improving their health outcomes, satisfaction, and empowerment.
Holistic
A holistic approach to support work is a way of providing care and support that considers the whole person, not just their specific needs or problems. A holistic approach recognises that a person’s physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing are interconnected and affect each other. A holistic approach aims to:
- Respect the person’s individuality, values, culture, and preferences
- Build a trusting and collaborative relationship with the person
- Focus on the person’s strengths, abilities, and potential, not just their challenges or limitations
- Support the person to make their own choices and decisions about their care and support
- Encourage the person to participate in activities that enhance their wellbeing and quality of life
- Work with the person’s family, carers, and other support services as part of a coordinated team
Unique
One possible unique approach to support work that could give participants better outcomes is the co-production approach. This is an approach that involves participants, their families, carers, and support workers as equal partners in designing, delivering, and evaluating the services they receive. Co-production is based on the principles of:
Recognising people as assets with skills, knowledge, and experience that can contribute to their own and others’ wellbeing
Building on people’s existing capabilities and supporting them to develop new ones
Promoting mutuality and reciprocity by creating opportunities for people to help each other and exchange value
Working with networks and communities to foster social connections and collective action
Breaking down barriers between professionals and participants, and between different service sectors and organisations
Taking a unique approach to support work give our participants more control and support to find unique solutions to their challenges
